A typical box of macaroni and cheese has "about 4 servings per container". Unless you're starving, this is just too much for one person. But with a little forethought and effort, you can prepare half a box.

  2. Once the water starts boiling, pour in the dry macaroni and set a timer for seven minutes though it may take longer-check for doneness & stir frequently.
  3. Measure out 2 tablespoon (29.6 ml) of milk and 1/2 TBSP of margarine or butter (or 2 TBSP margarine or butter for "classic prep").
  4. Rip off the top of the packet of cheese sauce mix and measure out 2 TBS of powdered cheese sauce mix (there are 4 TBSP in each packet, so we're only using half).
  5. After the macaroni has cooked, pour out the excess water, using a large spoon to prevent the noodles from falling into the sink or use a colander to drain then return noodles to pan. Then add the milk, margarine/butter and cheese sauce mix.

    Are the noodles smaller?
    Community Answer
No, the noodles are the same size whether you make one box or a half box.

Yes, you can. For the powder, just roll the packaging over and wrap tightly in a rubber band, then place back in the box with the macaroni pasta pieces. Seal the top of the box with tap or similar item like a rubber band or tape and put back into the pantry or cupboard. Be sure to use within a month, to avoid the powder going off.

      • Be sure to close the bag of remaining cheese sauce tightly, and use it within a few days to a week to avoid it spoiling. Refrigerating the bag will help keep it safe longer.
