  • Question
What if I used a pencil?
    Community Answer
Cut off the top of the pencil, then follow the other steps after. It depends on the size of your pencil to determine the thickness of your hook.
  • Question
How can I make the tip of my hook taper into a finer point?
    Michele
    Top Answerer
Gently file it as pointy as you desire with sandpaper on a stick. Make sure to get it nice and smooth since you don't want any splinters to catch on the yarn.
  • Question
Do I need a real chopstick?
    Community Answer
Real as opposed to fake? You can use any chopstick you want as long as you're able to carve it.
  • Question
Can I use a wooden chopstick as well?
    Community Answer
I wouldn't use a disposable chopstick, but a varnished or enamelled chopstick should do just fine.
  • Question
What if I don't have a pencil or a chopstick?
    Community Answer
Use your imagination. There is wood, plastic, bamboo everywhere. Pick up a stick out of the yard, or go to the store and buy a dowel.
  • Question
    How to measure the hook?
    Michele
    Top Answerer
You mean for size? Use tape and wrap it around the shaft. Mark where it joins, remove the tape and measure it. This is the circumference (distance around the outside) of the circle. You can then find the gauge (diameter) by multiplying by pi (3.14).
  • Question
How can I make different crochet hook size in my own preferrence?
    Lily
    Community Answer
Start with making a large hook, then take off a bit until you reach the size you like the most. Be slow with this process, to avoid it turning out too small.
  • Question
What if you don't have any sandpaper to make the hook smooth?
    Lily
    Community Answer
You could also use an Exacto or similar style knife. However, doing this is quite dangerous, so it’s a better idea to just go out and buy some sandpaper.
  • Question
What plastic materials could you use?
    Lily
    Community Answer
You could use hard plastic (such as the kind that you find in an old kid’s toy). Often, however, you will want to use wood or metal, as these are best.
  • Question
What do I do if I accidentally cut myself?
    Emery Cailin
    Top Answerer
Stop carving immediately to clean and bandage the cut. If you're able and want to, you can start carving again carefully after it stops bleeding, but if you're worried about cutting yourself again or reopening the wound, wait until it closes.
  • Question
When making an ergonomic hook (eg similar to Furls Streamline), what should the minimum length of the shaft be, where it determines the hook size, before gradually widening to the ergonomic handle?
    T. Chinsen
    Top Answerer
The average length from the tip to the start of an ergonomic handle is 1.5"(3.8 cm). The ergonomic handle area is 3.5"(8.9 cm) for a total length of 5"(12.7 cm) for a completed hook. The ergonomic handle on a Furls looks like it is the diameter of a thumb at the widest point and is therefore longer in length by 1"(2.5 cm) making it 6"(15 cm) in size.
