For example, if you need to add 1/6 and 1/2, you can't just add the tops and bottoms together. Instead, you have to find a common denominator. In this case, you can multiply the top and bottom of 1/2 by 3 to get 3/6. Then, you can add 1/6 and 3/6 to get 4/6, which you can simplify to 2/3.
