    Expert Answer
You can use a plug-in voltmeter that fits directly into your car's cigarette lighter or 12V accessory socket. This measures real-time readings of your car's voltages without the need for complicated wiring to be done. This is a great and easy option for quickly monitoring your car's battery’s health and alternator performance. Since it uses your car’s power directly, it’s quite accurate and reliable. Many models also offer extra features, such as USB charging ports for charging devices, making them more useful.
  • Question
Can I just use the two wires from my amp gauge to hook up to my new volt meter gauge?
    Community Answer
The voltmeter will cause a slight draw on the battery so I would recommend using a wire that is hot with the key in the "on" position.
  • Question
Where can I find the 12 volt ignition tie in point?
    Mike Lenci
    Community Answer
Most cars and trucks have a 12 volt "ignition on" access terminal at the fuse box. Look for an unused male or female terminal and test it with a test light when the ignition is turned on.
  • Question
Why do the wires spark when I hook them up?
    Community Answer
Because you're putting the wrong wires on first or you didn't disconnect the battery.
