Not really. It's not impossibly hard, but this is a good second or third project. I'd recommend starting with something that doesn't require special needles.

You can try, but it's going to be pretty tough. Circular needles are much easier to work with if you're making a baby hat.

It totally depends on the baby! Keep in mind that the size really only matters when you're making the initial cylinder. Once you have that initial circle completed, you just slowly shorten each additional row to create the cap.

  • Question
Do I need to cast off after I taper the ends?
    Community Answer
You should only have 1 stitch remaining on your right needle after you "taper" (or decrease), so all you have to do in order to cast off is cut the yarn and pull the loose tail through this last stitch.
  • Question
How many inches should the circumference be?
    Community Answer
Cast on 30 stitches. The length should be at least 2 inches.
  • Question
How do I introduce a second color of yarn in the knitting project?
    Community Answer
I had a similar issue when I was using two unattached yarns. My mom just told me to tie the pieces of the yarn together (double knot) and cut the excess. The knot will land on one side and that can be the back side.

  • Question
How many stitches should I cast on for a toddler hat?
    Top Answerer
Most patterns have the stitch count for different sizes of hats. If you do not have this on a pattern, a simple solution is to increase the needle size by 2 sizes. You can the follow the pattern without having to make modifications needed for added on stitches. As an example, if a baby hat uses 3 mm needles, then a toddler hat will require a 4 or 4.5 mm needles.
  • Question
How do I adjust a pattern for 2.5mm needles?
    Top Answerer
If the original pattern used 5 mm needles, you will need to double the number of stitches. Otherwise, take the gauge and divide the needle size to get the number of stitches (i.e. 10 cm divided by 2.5 mm will give 40 stitches) to get the equivalent gauge.

  • Question
What weight yarn for the baby hat?
    Tianna Schwindel
    Community Answer
Medium to heavy weight yarn works the best because it provides the best warmth. But if you are knitting a hat that is not going to be used for winter, and just for show, you can use lightweight yarn to keep the baby's head cool in the summer.
  • Question
If I cast on 60 stitches and then reduce by knitting 2 stitches together along the row, how do I end up with one left to keep on the needle as your photo shows?
    Top Answerer
The example shown is knitted using circular needles and 2 stitches are knitted together all the way to the end. This means that 60 stitches will become a total of 30 and then 15, which goes to 8 to 4 to 2 and finally 1.
  • Question
I cast on 60 stitches, as you suggested. How many inches should this come to?
    Top Answerer
4mm x 60 stitches = 240 mm This is ~10" with 4 ply yarn. How tight you knit can also make it smaller it you are tight and bigger if you are loose by about 1" either way.
  • Question
Is it correct that you say to cast on 60 loops? I have, and this just seems like a lot.
    Top Answerer
It may seem like a lot but the this is average for baby patterns. Using the same yarn and needles, a child's hat needs about 100 stitches and for an adult ~120 stitches. Using the same pattern, with baby or sport weight 3 ply yarn will result in smaller hat. 4 ply or bulky yarn can increase the size by 2-3 inches if you do not change needle size.
  • Question
How many stitches do I need to knit an adult hat?
    Clara Sanders-Garcia
    Community Answer
To knit an adult hat, try doing from 100 stitches to 150 stitches, depending on how big the head of the person is. It is better to make the hat too big than to have a hat that doesn't fit on your head.
  • Question
What size needles should I use for a newborn beanie? The wool is 8 ply.
    DiamondWarrior649
    Top Answerer
You will probably want to use 7 – 9 mm. needles. It depends on the gauge you want, really. If you want a looser beanie, you will want to stay in the 8 – 9 mm. If you want a tight knit beanie, go for 7 – 8 inches.
  • Question
I am using bulky yarn how many stitches do I need?
    Community Answer
Depending on the size of that baby's head, you'll have to adjust how many stitches you need. With bulky yarn, you won't need to cast on as many stitches, but you can always gauge the yarn by knitting a sample square to see how big it turns out (for example, knitting a sample square that has 10 stitches then measuring how wide it is. When knitting, the stitches that you cast on tend to 'shrink', which is why it's best to knit a square and not just measure how wide the cast on is before you start to knit it).
  • Question
Can I knit the hat in 4ply wool?
    Community Answer
You can knit a hat using any kind of wool, but most baby garments use quite thin yarn.
  • Question
How do I make a hat for a premature baby?
    Community Answer
Use a needle size that is 2 sizes smaller and a finer yarn weight than recommended for the pattern. For example: Switch a #8(5 mm) to a #6(4 mm) with yarn from 4 ply to a 3 ply. This will work for any baby pattern. Alternatively, you can halve the number of stitches and rows without changing the needle and yarn sizes. There are also free patterns available online.
  • Question
How many stitches do I need for a newborn baby hat?

  • Question
How do I pick a pattern when knitting a baby hat?
    Community Answer
Pick one that is within your skill level or learn a new skill level. If you prefer a certain needle type (straight, circular, etc.), then it may determine your pattern. Experiment, but always write down what you are using, the size/type of needles and name brand of yarn/color also and how many stitches you cast on, rows knit/purl, and when decreased for top of hat-if decreased. Find a pattern or make your own. Use same pattern over and again once you love it, and make small changes to that when you feel ready.
  • Question
How many stitches do I cast on if I have a 5.5 mm needle?

17 to 18 stitches. But it all depends on the instructions. You could ask someone who knows how to knit to show you.
  • Question
Can I use thick and fluffy yarn for the hat?
    Julienne Deverson
    Community Answer
When picking out yarn for a baby hat, rub the yarn on your skin. If it feels soft and gentle on your skin, then it'll be nice and comfy for the baby. If it feels rough or irritates your skin, try a different type of yarn.
