  • Question
How much aftershave will these ingredients make?
    Leila Smith
    Community Answer
Most of these recipes will make around 3/4 of a cup of solution. Others may make a little less or a little more. The best way to find out exactly is by taking the sum of the amount of all of the ingredients.
  • Question
Will using alcohol in the aftershave make me smell like alcohol?

The alcohol is actually broken down by enzymes in your skin, getting rid of any discernible scent. In fact, using a little extra booze can result in a brighter appearance to your skin.

  • Question

I wouldn't, because it would feel very greasy.
  • Question
Would this recipe/protocol allow me to create a top end type aftershave such as Creed or Diesel? That is, long lasting fragrance that smells amazing so that I can create my own brand?
    Community Answer
Your brand would only become like a 'Top End' brand or product if you added the same ingredients in the right combination. You would need to study to become a perfumier or "nose" and not just experiment without knowledge of what is involved in combining scents and bases.
  • Question
When you say 1/2 cup of alcohol, may I know the quantity equivalent in litres?
    Community Answer
Here is a guide to the different measurements of liquid: 1/2 cup or 4 oz. or 8 tbsp or 24 tsp or 120ml. It cannot be given in liters.
  • Question
If my alcohol is only 50%, is that enough to preserve the witch hazel?
    Community Answer
Most witch hazels have a small amount of rubbing alcohol in them already, and are shelf-stable. The parts of your aftershave that will go bad are the oils (can go rancid) and any sugars that could be in the other ingredients (bacteria and mold). Drinkable alcohols often have added sugar for taste - I would avoid these for topical use but sugars can make your skin smoother, it depends on your own body chemistry. If oils going rancid is a concern, try mixing the aftershave base separately and only adding a drop of essential oils or vitamin E oil to a small amount that will be used up within a month.
