You can, but then it won't really be a tunnel. Tunnels are meant to make the gerbil feel safe and unseen; with windows, it's just a lit up path with lots of holes. It won't be the "protection" they are looking for.

Maybe you could take two paper towel rolls, cut a line along both of them and tape them together to have a giant tunnel for him. Or, if you have old wooden play blocks and a flat surface, you could set the blocks up to make a maze with food or treats at the end.
