What is the importance of measuring the tree?

Somebody felling a tree would need this to determine if the tree might hit anything, such as a house, as it falls down. The height of the tree would become the damage radius.

Why do I measure the shadow of the tree, why not just measure the tree itself?

The shadow is typically on the ground (unless it falls on a building, other trees, etc.), and it's much easier to measure a thirty foot shadow rather than taking a ladder and actually measuring the tree. Besides, the tree-tops would make it hard to measure accurately, since the leaves on most trees are always moving a little bit.
