PDF download Download Article

If you're dealing with negative energy from a particular person, it's natural to want to send those bad vibes right back at them. A “return to sender” spell might just be the perfect way to reflect those harmful energies—without picking up any of your own bad karma in the process. The next time you feel someone has it out for you, consider trying one of these 5 return to sender spells!

Method 1 of 5:

Cauldron Spell

  1. Are you getting unwanted attention you need to reflect? Do you want to reverse a spell that’s been cast on you? Meditate on the problem you’re facing and decide how you want it to be resolved. When you figure out what exactly you want, write it down on a piece of paper.
    • For example, you could write “[Person]’s actions will only affect themself” or “[Person] will have their energy reflected back to them.”
  2. If you have an altar (or any dedicated spellcrafting area) set up your workspace there. If not, a cleared off table is perfectly fine. Set the candles in a circle and place a cauldron in the middle. [1]
    • Black candles are considered magically protective.
    • If you don’t have a cauldron, use a fireproof bowl.
    • Odd numbers are considered powerful in spellcrafting.

  3. Keep lighting the candles from the center (first the one in front of you, then the two on either side, then the two on either side of those, etc.) and meditate on your intention for the spell. Spend a moment on each candle thinking about what you want.
  4. Herbs such as basil, rosemary, sage, mint, and juniper are thought to cleanse and banish negative energy. Imbue the herbs with your energy by holding them in your hands and focusing on your intentions for the spell. [2]
  5. Fold the paper up and tie it with a piece of string. Then, rest the paper gently on top of the herbs.
  6. Clear your mind of everything except what you want from the spell, then speak it out loud. Imagine the negative energy in your life sinking into the herbs and being sent back to where it came from. Extinguish each of the candles and imagine the spell being sealed and negative energies dispersed. [3]
  7. Use a long match or stick to light the paper and herbs on fire. Let everything burn, then bury the ashes outside. Be sure to wait until the ashes cool completely before burying them.

Lemon Spell

  1. Use [1] to encourage spiritual strength and to cleanse the energy around you. Watch the smoke of the incense and think about the negativity you’re receiving and who you’d like to send it back to. Light the black candle when you’re sure of what you want from the spell.
    • Spells work through the intentions put into them. Think specifically about what you want from this spell. Do you want someone to leave you alone entirely or do you want someone to just see the effects of their actions?
  2. Cut a lemon in half and stick 3 cloves into either side. [4] Lemons are considered to have powerful energetic and protective properties. They can also be used to send sour energy . The cloves are protective herbs thought to send energy back out.
  3. Hold your intentions in your mind and say the following words: “The pain you caused is now your own.” [5] You can repeat the incantation several times if you'd like until you feel ready to proceed.
  4. The lemon absorbs negative energy coming your way and the cloves send it back out. Blow out the candles to release the spell and keep the lemon under your bed until you see it start working.

String Spell

  1. This spell relies on spiritual entities to help send that negativity back. Ring a bell to get their attention and say “I am immune to their hate and malice, I do not accept their guilt, their actions are no bane to me.” [6]
  2. Black candles are classically used for protection magic. When lighting the candle, say “As this mirror reflects the light of this candle, so shall these negative energies be reflected back to their senders. The mirror neither adds nor subtracts from the reflection, and I so too add no extra malice. So it comes to me, I return to them.” [7]
  3. To bind this spell to its intended recipient, use a black string to symbolically tie the spell in place. As you tie each knot, say “With this string I bind this spell.” [8]
  4. Thank the spirits for their help and let them know they can leave. Tell them, “I am grateful for your blessings, you are needed no more.” Put the string in a box and seal it tightly. Leave the string in the box until the spell has worked, then burn the box.
    • Let the candle go out on its own. Blowing it out will release the energy of the spell and affect its efficacy.

Mirror Protection Spell

  1. Mirrors are highly magical objects, reflecting energy and absorbing what comes in front of them. Smudge the mirror with smoke to be sure it’s totally free of outside energy. Let smoke waft over every part of the mirror, then wash it with salt water to further purify it. Leave it out in the sun to dry completely.</ref>
    • Common herbs for cleansing are sage, rosemary, and lavender. White sage is renowned for its magical properties, but most white sage for sale has been illegally harvested. While buying white sage isn’t recommended, you can grow it yourself at home or substitute it for garden sage.
  2. To protect yourself from and to reflect further negative energy, rest the mirror facing out against a window.
  3. Make an unbroken circle around yourself and the candle with a line of salt. While you’re in the circle, point your body towards each of the cardinal directions and say “I cast this circle to protect myself, keep out evil and let in love.”
  4. Look into the flame and visualize it gathering the negative energy. Say: “Negative energy sent my way, the mirror reflects and the sender repays.” Close your eyes and imagine the mirror gathering energy from the candle and sending it back to the troublemaker you’re targeting.
  5. Face each cardinal direction again and say “The circle is open,” then break the line of salt with your foot and sweep up. Let the candle burn down completely, then bury the remains. Leave the mirror in your window to keep reflecting negativity.
    • The spell is thought to dissipate if you blow the candle out. If you need to put it out for safety reasons, use a candle snuffer or a large glass to keep the energy from dispersing.

Mirror Reflection Spell

  1. Smudge a protective herb , like rosemary, sage, or lavender to clear the energies out of your body and spellcasting area. Bring a smudge stick down in front of your body, from head to toe, and let yourself be covered by the smoke. Hold a small mirror in the smoke to clean it for your spell, then lay it on the floor. [9]
  2. Use a black candle (for protection) to gather any negative energy from your body. [10] Imagine the energy as a cloth you’re rolling up on the candle, or a film that you’re scraping off.
  3. Put the candle in the center of the mirror and light it. Look into the flame and say “Black as night, candle bright, burn the magic sent my way. Return it to its sender” 13 times. [11] Allow the candle to go out on its own.
  4. Once the candle is fully burnt down and cooled, take it off the mirror and bury it far away from your house. You can keep the mirror for future return to sender spells as long as you smoke cleanse it again.
