Getting Started

  1. There are a variety of live-streaming platforms. Almost all social media platforms, including Facebook, X/Twitter, and Instagram have live streaming capabilities. Video platforms like YouTube and TikTok also have live-streaming. Twitch is primarily focused on live streaming. The following are things to consider when deciding on a streaming platform: [1]
    • How many followers do you already have on a platform?
    • Terms of service and community guidelines (Is your content allowed on the platform?).
    • Live-streaming requirements (i.e. required follower/subscriber count)
    • Video hosting and management options.
    • Monetization and advertising options.
    • RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol) streaming support, which is needed to use broadcast software.
    • Sharing and encoding capabilities.
  2. You'll need a computer that can handle video processing as well as any other software you use while streaming. For example, if you are a gamer, you'll need a computer that can process video capture and run your game without any framerate drops. You'll also need a high-speed broadband internet connection The following are the minimum recommended requirements for streaming: [2] [3] [4]
    • CPU: Intel i5 Quad Core or better or AMD FX series or better.
    • GPU: DirectX 10 capable graphics card. NVIDIA GeForce RTX or AMD Radeon recommended.
      • A graphics card with NVENC encoding will greatly help.
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM or better.
    • Internet: 3,000 Kbps upload speed or higher (higher for HD and 4K streaming).

  3. Many platforms allow you to stream directly over the platform using the official mobile app or web browser. However, this will usually produce a lower-quality stream. There are many broadcast programs that allow you to add multiple video and audio sources, as well as images, logos, and the ability to create different window configurations. The following are some broadcast software options you can choose from:
    • OBS Studio: OBS Studio is a free and open-source broadcast option that is a popular choice for streamers. It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can download OBS Studio from https://obsproject.com/download .
    • Streamlabs OBS: Streamlabs OBS is another broadcast program that has a more streamlined user interface than OBS Studio which is easier to use. It also has more features, though you have to pay for many of them. It includes a free version of the program that places a watermark in your live video. You can download Streamlabs OBS from https://streamlabs.com/
    • vMix: vMix is a paid broadcast program that has lots of features. However, it may be a little harder for new users. It is only available for Windows. You can download vMix from https://www.vmix.com/
    • Wirecast: Wirecast is another paid broadcast program. It's easier to use than OBS Studio and has more functionality. You can download Wirecast at https://www.telestream.net/telestream-support/wire-cast/versions.htm
    • TikTok Live Studio: TikTok Live Studio is the official broadcast software for streaming live on TikTok. It's free to download and easy to use, but it only works with TikTok. If you meet the qualifications for live streaming on TikTok, you can download TikTok Live Studio from https://www.tiktok.com/studio/download .
  4. Your microphone will allow you to add your own commentary and chat with your viewers directly. If you want them to be able to see you while you play, you’ll also need to connect a webcam to your computer . Some good audio/video equipment will make your viewers feel like they’re hanging out with a close friend rather than just watching an anonymous player run through levels and unlock achievements without a word. [5]
    • Don’t worry if a new microphone just isn’t in your budget. You can get by just fine using an ordinary gaming headset, though the audio quality may not be quite as crisp as a standalone mic. [6]
    • While a webcam isn’t a strict necessity, it will help you better engage with your audience, which is critical if you’re hoping to build a dedicated following or make yourself attractive to sponsors.
  5. The way you do this will be different depending on which software you choose. You'll need to get the stream key and server URL from the platform you use and enter it into your broadcast software. You will also need to connect your webcam and microphone and add an audio and video source. If you are a gamer, you'll need to add a source for the game you are playing. You can arrange the different video source however you want in your window.
    • Most streaming programs allow you to create different scenes with a unique arrangement of video sources. For example, you can make a video game prominent in one scene and add your webcam feed as a small window in the corner in one scene. Then you can create a separate scene with your webcam feed front and center for when you want to talk to your viewers without the game on screen. You can switch scenes instantly during a stream.
    • You can also add images, such as backgrounds, logos, and text to your live stream.
  6. When you are ready to start streaming, open your broadcast software and click the option to start streaming. When you are finished, click the same button to stop streaming.

Growing Your Audience

  1. Make it a point to go on at the same time every day or every week, or whenever you have time to sit down at your PC. You’ll be most visible to your followers if they can tune in at a certain time to catch your feed. Once you’ve made up your mind about when and how often you want to go on, stick to your schedule. [7]
    • Be sure to remind your audience what time you go live at the beginning or end of every broadcast. That way, first-time viewers will know when they can expect to see you next.
    • If you need to change your schedule, be sure to let your followers know well in advanced. You can post about it on social media, Discord, or wherever you like to keep your viewers informed.

Warning: If you go live at random times, your followers won’t know when to head to your channel, and your viewership will be severely limited as a result.

  2. If you are a gamer, pick a specific popular game or franchise that you are good at. Stick to that game. If you are a musician, you can do regular streams where you play your instrument. Perhaps you like to talk politics, or you have a lot of knowledge about a specific topic. Do a regular live stream where you talk about what you know.
    • Many casual gaming enthusiasts browse Twitch looking for content related to a specific game. For this reason, choosing just one or two titles can be a good way to build a strong fanbase when you’re first starting out. As you get more eyes on your channel, you can begin venturing into other series or genres to mix things up and give your viewers something different.
    • Streaming gameplay of new and popular franchises like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, or Minecraft can gain a large following from these games' massive fanbase.
    • If your reason for getting into streaming is to put your gaming skills on display, go with the game that you’re best at. Otherwise, pick the title that will allow you to have the most fun. This will be more interesting for both you and your audience.
  3. Streaming is a large, crowded field. You'll need to do something to stand out amongst the crowd. You might talk in a funny voice, tell jokes, or dress up as your favorite character from the game you’re playing. The most important thing is that you’re doing something that no one else does. [8]
    • You don’t have to be a master of impressions or an award-winning cosplay artist to separate yourself from the pack. Making yourself more recognizable can be as easy as having a unique hairstyle or situating an eye-grabbing object behind you on-screen.
    • No matter what sort of quirks you work into your broadcasts, your gimmick shouldn’t be so distracting that your audience has a hard time appreciating what’s happening in the game.
  4. Most streaming platforms have a chat built-in to the interface. This little box lets viewers who are watching your broadcast leave comments, which you can read in real-time as you’re playing. Scan your chat window and take the time to respond to a few of the comments there. Your followers will appreciate it, and so will you when your viewer numbers go up.
    • Getting to know your audience also gives you the chance to make new friends. This is a benefit in itself, of course, but it’s also guaranteed to help other users find out about your channel via word-of-mouth promotion. [9]
    • Another way to get your viewers involved with your channel is to do things that motivate them to take action, such as asking questions, trading fan theories, or even holding giveaways.
    • Some platforms, such as Twitch, allow you to add custom emojis and features that only your subscribers have access to. You can even assign followers custom roles. This is a great way to engage with your viewers.
  5. Like it or not, social media is without a doubt the best way to reach a lot of people in a short time. Take to Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter and TikTok to advertise your channel and tell your followers when you’ll be going live. By doing so, you can extend your reach [10]
    • In addition to your personal social media accounts, you might consider uploading impressive in-game moments, outtakes, and other “best of” moments to YouTube.
    • Social media can also be useful for dropping reminders and special announcements, such as collaborations and playthroughs of obscure or unusual games.
  6. In a lot of cases, viewers come for your personality rather than the game or activity you are doing. It’s no coincidence that the most-followed streamers also tend to be the most charismatic. It won’t even matter what you’re playing anymore after you reach a certain level of notability—people will flock to your channel just to see you be you. [11]
    • If you have a boisterous, extroverted personality, feel free to be silly, crack jokes, and treat your viewers to some zany antics along the way. If you’re more the quiet type, lead off with some thought-provoking topics for discussion in your chat, or simply let your in-game achievements do the talking.
  7. No one will want to watch you do your thing if you don’t look like you’re enjoying yourself. Streaming can be nerve-wracking, especially when you have a dozen or more strangers scrutinizing your every move, but try not to take it too seriously. At the end of the day, you’re streaming for the same reason you started playing video games in the first place—to have a good time. [12]
    • Even the most high-profile streamers take a day off every now and then. If your heart just isn’t in it, pick out a less difficult title for some casual play, or host another user’s channel on your feed to take the attention off of yourself and give your friends more exposure.
    • Remember, if you’re not enjoying yourself, no one else will be either.
