Improving Your Skincare & Hygiene

  1. Board-certified dermatologist Paul Friedman recommends washing “at the end of the day to help remove the debris and the oil that accumulates on our skin throughout the day.” [1] Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser and lukewarm water. [2]
    • While washing your face, be gentle. Scrubbing too hard can irritate your skin and cause pimples or make existing acne worse.
    • Apply a toner to help balance your skin’s pH (acid-alkaline ratio) and keep your skin looking healthier . Avoid toners that contain alcohol, which can dry out and irritate your skin.
    • Apply a moisturizer after washing and toning your face to help seal in moisture and keep your skin healthy and glowing. [3]
  2. 2
Choose skincare products designed for your skin type. While there are many products that can be used with most skin types , you may get better results from targeted formulations. Most brands make choosing the right product easy by explicitly stating on their labels which skin type their cleanser is designed for. You’ll likely see products formulated for the following skin types: [4]
    • Normal – Skin that’s not particularly dry, oily, or sensitive. Most products are suitable for this skin type.
    • Combination – Skin that’s dry on cheeks and oily on forehead, nose, and chin. Use a gentle, balanced cleanser that’s not too creamy or drying, alcohol-free toners, and a medium-weight lotion moisturizer.
    • Oily/acne-prone – Oily skin on the entire face with frequent blemishes. Use a gel cleanser with glycolic or salicylic acid to control oil and treat breakouts, toners with alpha and beta hydroxy acids, and oil-free moisturizers.
    • Dry – Skin that’s flaky, itchy, or feels rough. Use a creamy cleanser with glycerin or ceramides . Look for toners and moisturizers with hyaluronic acid.
    • Sensitive – Skin that’s easily irritated by products. [5] Look for mild cleansers , toners, and moisturizers without dyes or fragrances.

Exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells and brighten your skin. Friedman cautions against being too aggressive when you’re exfoliating or using products that are too harsh for your skin. This can cause irritation that leads to dryness and acne. He recommends a topical vitamin A formulation that helps stimulate collagen and offers mild exfoliating properties. [6]
    • If you have severe acne, avoid exfoliating, as the friction can irritate your skin.
    • Apply a moisturizer after exfoliating your skin to help minimize any irritation that your product might cause.
  4. Avoid squeezing your pimples, whether you have acne or even the occasional blemish. Popping pimples can cause irritation, infection, and scarring. [7] Instead, use an acne spot treatment on the occasional blemish. Look for products containing benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids. [8]
    • If you have severe acne and are really struggling to get it under control, consider seeing a doctor or dermatologist to help you reduce or even get rid of it.
    • You might find that the doctor or dermatologist recommends a medication, a topical cream, or a combination of both.
    • If you’re a male and you shave your face, try shaving in the same direction as your hair growth to avoid breakouts caused by irritation.
  5. Body odor and bad breath can be real turnoffs. [9] The good news is that practicing good personal hygiene is easy and effective for banishing smelly odors. Raise your attractiveness quotient by following the simple steps below:
    • Shower several times a week with gentle soap and warm water.
    • Take care of the skin on your body by blotting your skin dry and using a moisturizer daily after your shower.
    • Apply a deodorant or antiperspirant to stay dry and odor-free throughout the day. [10]
    • Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily for fresh breath and good oral health. [11]
    • Pop a couple of mints, chew gum, or use a breath spray to freshen your breath if you’re self-conscious.
    • Spray a cologne or perfume on pulse points like your wrist, neck, and inside of your elbows to add an extra layer of attraction. [12]
  6. There’s a strong link between sun exposure and skin cancer, so it’s extremely important to wear sunscreen every day. In addition to the cancer risk, sun exposure can damage your skin and cause premature aging. [13] Look for a sunscreen that is labeled “broad spectrum” and SPF 30 or higher. Use a nickel-sized dollop for your face. [14]
    • Many facial moisturizers include an SPF of 15 to 30. However, SPF doesn’t “stack,” so you need a separate sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher if your moisturizer has 15 SPF.
    • Make sure the sunscreen for your body has an SPF of at least 30.
    • Apply about 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of sunscreen to your exposed body parts.
    • Put sunscreen on your face and body at least 15 minutes before you go outside and reapply every 2 hours. [15]
  7. If you feel self-conscious about your complexion, consider trying a non-comedogenic tinted moisturizer or concealer that won’t clog pores. Some common pore-clogging ingredients to avoid include linseed oil, cocoa butter, lanolin acid, and coconut oil. [16]
    • To target a pimple or any other redness on your face, you can try dabbing on green concealer before going over it with a concealer that matches your skin tone.
    • Note that wearing makeup can exacerbate acne, although some brands add ingredients to help fight it.

Improving Your Clothing & Style

  1. According to certified image consultant Tavia Sharp, focus on “creating a signature look for yourself and making sure it reflects your personality.” [17] Wardrobe stylist Ashley Kahn adds, “When you get into the closet, we can start to find patterns in what you have purchased and start to find a trend with the style that you're leaning towards.” [18]
    • If you don’t already have a good sense of how you want to present yourself, start a style diary or even an online folder of styles you like. Kahn suggests getting style inspiration from Pinterest. [19]

Invest in well-made garments. Choose clothes made of high-quality fabrics like wool, silk, and cashmere. They last longer and exude luxury. Look for clean stitching, smooth seams, and a well-tailored fit. Focusing on clothes of this quality will help you build a personal style that conveys understated elegance.

  2. Improving your appearance is largely about improving your confidence, so wear clothes that make you feel good. Kahn says, “Most women are wearing sizes that are too large…Make sure that you find clothes that are going to define your figure and not hug your curves too tightly.” [20] Use clothing to accentuate the things you like about your body. “When you wear clothing that fits your body properly…it shows that you…care about the way you present yourself,” advises Sharp. [21]
    • Go through your entire wardrobe and get rid of anything that doesn’t look great on you. Kahn says, “You want to make sure that you don't have clothes in there that don't fit you or that are uncomfortable. You want to make sure that all that is purged out and everything in there is something that you feel good in…that you feel comfortable in.” [22] This includes workout clothes and sleepwear.
    • “The reason we spend so much time in our closets looking for an outfit is because we literally can't see through the clutter,” advises Kahn. Clearing it out helps you get ready faster. [23]
    • When you buy shoes, be sure they fit comfortably! It's hard to be stylish in shoes that are too tight or too big, advises Kahn. [24]
    • Sharp recommends finding stores and brands that carry clothing that fits your build and body type. [25]
  3. Figuring out whether you have a warm or cool skin tone is a great starting point when deciding what colors to wear. When a color reflects onto your face or makes you look like there are shadows around your eyes, it’s one you should avoid. [26] If you’re struggling to tell what clothing colors look good on you , ask a friend to come along with you when you go out shopping for new clothes to help.
    • If you have a warm skin tone, you’ll have yellow undertones, greenish veins, and look good in earthy shades like burnt orange, cream, yellow, brown, and autumn red.
    • If you have a cool skin tone, you’ll have pink undertones, bluish veins, and look good in “cool” colors like black, sage green, royal blue, navy, and gray.
    • Kahn recommends looking for great basic pieces you can mix and match with clothing you already have. [27]
  4. Add watches, sunglasses, ties, necklaces, or other accessories to transform your basic outfit into something unique and interesting. The right accessories can also make your outfit look more put-together, whether it’s jeans and a T-shirt or evening wear. [28]
    • Sharp recommends that guys go bold and have a little fun with their ties to bring more personality to menswear. [29]
    • For example, if you always wear black, try adding bold accessories. This might mean a chunky necklace with bright lipstick or a patterned tie with vintage cuff links.
    • Even sunglasses and hats can help make an outfit look more intentional.
    • Keep your nails trimmed and manicured and, if it’s something you're into, paint them to match your outfits.
  5. According to Sharp, “When you're wearing clothes that are too wrinkled or look very creased, it…gives off a poor impression.” She adds that it’s important to take good care of the materials and store them properly to keep a garment in good condition…and don’t wear clothing that’s stained or has holes. [30] Ensure that your clothes are clean and, if necessary, pressed.
    • A good rule of thumb is to wash undershirts, underwear, and exercise clothes after each wear (with the exception of bras, which you can wear several times before washing).
    • Dress shirts and slacks will likely need to be ironed after washing.
    • Wash tops after one or two wears, depending on how much you perspire. Wash pants after five or six wears and coats every one or two months. [31]

Taking Care of Your Hair

PDF download Download Article
  1. Is your hair thick or thin? Is it dry, oily, or somewhere in between? Is it color-treated? Curly? Straight? All of these things influence which hair products you buy. Most brands label which hair type their products are designed for. [32]
    • Only wash your hair when it starts to get oily and flat. Washing hair more often than it needs can dry it out and cause damage, especially if you use hot tools to style it.
    • When you wash your hair, only apply shampoo to the scalp to avoid drying out the ends.
    • Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle wet hair to avoid breakage.
    • Always use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying or using hot tools.
  2. Figure out if your face shape is square (as wide as it is long, with an angular chin), oval (longer than it is wide), or heart-shaped (cheeks are the widest and your chin comes to a point). Then, choose a hairstyles that flatters your face shape . [33] Here are some suggestions:
    • Square – Edgy, angular cuts, like a chin-length bob, flatter this face shape, but softer layers can also work.
    • Round – This face shape looks great with hairstyles that have sleek lines and tapered ends, like a medium-length cut with lots of face-framing layers.
    • Oval – Oval faces look more balanced with layers, no matter the length. Bangs can also give the long, oval face a more balanced appearance.
    • Heart-shaped – Short layers or long bangs are perfect for accentuating the high cheekbones of heart-shaped faces.
  3. Ask friends with awesome hairstyles for recommendations, or read reviews online of hair stylists in your area. Then, bring photos of your favorite haircuts and styles to your appointment. That way, the stylist can see exactly what you want. [34]
    • Talk to them about what you’re going for, and make sure you’re both clear on what you want so you end up getting a haircut you love .
    • The style you want might not work for your hair texture, but a good stylist can tweak it or recommend something similar that works better for you.
    • Talk about any issues you have with styling your hair, like texture, cowlicks, etc.
  4. Your natural hair color matches your skin tone, but coloring your hair can be a great way to make your eyes pop or add a little extra excitement to your overall look. As with clothing colors, select your hair color based on your skin tone (i.e. warm or cool). Licensed cosmetologist Kana Ishii recommends staying in the same color family as your skin tone when choosing a hair color. [35]
    • Ishii adds, “For example, if you have a pale or light olive skin tone, any cool colors such as Ash brown, Lavender, Platinum Blonde are perfect.” [36]
    • If you have a warm skin tone, you’re better off sticking with earthier shades like red, copper, or a rich, warm brown.
    • For the best results, get your hair professionally colored. This allows you to consult the stylist on what they think will work best with your skin tone.
    • A stylist also has higher quality products that may cause less damage to your hair.
  5. If you’re a woman, you may want to tweeze your eyebrows and remove any other facial hair , like hair that’s coming out of moles, on your upper lip, or your chin. Try plucking, dermaplaning, waxing, sugaring, threading, or depilatory creams to remove it. [37] This gives your face a smoother appearance and makes applying makeup easier.
    • If you're a man, manage your facial hair with eyebrow trimming, shaving, and/or mustache and beard trimming and shaping.
    • Pay attention to your face shape when you’re shaping and trimming your facial hair . For example, men with a heart-shaped face might find it useful to grow a goatee or beard to help balance out the upper part of their face.
  6. It’s popular for women and some men to get rid of body hair by shaving their legs and underarms and trimming their pubic hair. Shaving , hair removal cream, and waxing all remove body hair temporarily. For a more permanent option, try electrolysis . [38] Each method has pros and cons, so make sure to do a little research to decide which is best for you.
    • Shaving is convenient, but it may cause razor burn. Avoid the burn by shaving in the direction of your hair growth, using light, short strokes, and replacing your blade often. [39]
    • With waxing, there’s less upkeep than shaving, but it can cause skin irritation. It’s especially important to skip waxing if you have eczema. It can cause a flare-up.
    • Hair removal creams are easy to use but can cause skin damage if left on too long. These products may cause allergic reactions in some people. [40]
    • If you don’t want to remove your body hair, don’t do it! You’ll look great with or without hair. It’s just a matter of preference.

Improving Your Posture & Body Language

PDF download Download Article
  1. Good posture means standing up straight with your shoulders back and your stomach pulled in. When standing, put your weight on the balls of your feet with them positioned about shoulder-width apart. [41]
    • Practice good posture by sitting up and not hunching over.
    • When you’re talking with someone, try leaning slightly toward them to show you’re really keyed into what they’re saying.
    • Keep both feet on the floor, and don’t cross your legs.
    • Make sure your back, hips, and thighs are supported, and keep your elbows close to your body.
  2. When you’re talking with someone face to face, 55% of your communication is non-verbal. [42] A warm, genuine smile that reaches your eyes is one of the easiest ways to improve your appearance and show someone you’re open to chatting. Then, pair it with open, relaxed, and welcoming body language to send a positive message.
    • Look them in the eye to show you’re focused on them, but don’t feel you need to lock eyes. Try focusing on one eye for about 10 seconds and then moving to the other.
    • Use a strong voice with a warm tone of voice when speaking, and nod or make affirming sounds like “uh-huh” as they speak.
    • Avoid crossing your arms or legs, which can make you seem closed off.
  3. People who are confident and comfortable in their own skin have an attractiveness about them that no amount of styling, grooming, or fitness can match. [43] When people know you’re consistently upbeat, they're more likely to want to be around you. If they know you're sometimes fun but sometimes a real downer, they might be nervous to approach you.
    • Don’t let that negative voice in your head tell you you’re not good enough or attractive enough. Acknowledge it and then counter it with positive self-talk.
    • If your clothes feel a bit tight one morning, instead of thinking, “I’m so fat and ugly,” try to think, “My clothes are a bit tight, but it’s not the end of the world.”
    • Then, counter with positive talk: “I was great in that meeting yesterday,” or “I’m proud that I am trying to improve my self-image.”
    • You might find that you seek out certain icons or gurus as models of what you want to be like. Just make sure you’re striving to be the best YOU you can be.
  4. Being charismatic means being confident (but not cocky), interesting, optimistic, and an active listener. [44] In a conversation, you might tell a great story or crack a hilarious joke, but you primarily focus on the other person. Ask the other person for advice or a recommendation. If they share an opinion with you, validate it, and don't be judgmental.
    • Another way to keep the focus on them is to ask lots of questions to keep the conversation going.
    • Try being charismatic in conversation by asking open-ended questions that require more than a 1 or 2-word answer. Then, ask them follow-up questions to keep them talking.
    • Part of being confident and charismatic is learning to love yourself and be true to who you are. Figure out what you like about yourself and think about how you can play it up .

Improving Your Mental & Physical Health

PDF download Download Article
  1. According to life coach and consultant Rachel Clissold, most people don’t drink enough water. [45] Staying hydrated not only improves the quality of your skin but also helps keep you focused and energetic. It might even help you shed a few pounds. Plus, proper hydration is good for your heart, kidneys, and digestive system. [46]
    • In general, an average healthy man needs about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day. An average healthy woman needs about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day.
    • To verify you’re properly hydrated, check that the color of your urine is clear or very lightly colored. [47]
    • Clissold recommends, “As soon as you wake up, have a liter of water. Put some lemon in there and just drink it mindfully.” [48]
  2. “Whether it’s plant protein or animal protein, having the right amount of protein is vital to feel satisfied after a meal…[aim for] 45 g for women and 55 grams for men,” advises certified holistic health coach Theresa Fitzpatrick. [49] Add healthy fats from food like extra virgin olive oil and avocados. Eat lots of fruits and veggies to get plenty of vitamins and minerals.
    • If you have any specific dietary requirements, you may find it useful to consult a nutritionist about the best diet for you.
    • Unless you’re working with a doctor to decrease your weight significantly, avoid cutting calories or cutting out otherwise healthy food groups to lose weight.
  3. Personal trainer Errol Ismail recommends working out first thing in the morning to avoid getting derailed. [50] Choose physical activities you enjoy and ease them into your lifestyle. Work up to being active for at least 30 minutes each day, with longer, more intense workouts 3-5 days each week.
    • Try to add a mix of flexibility, strength, and cardio workouts.
    • If you’re struggling with a medical condition, consult your doctor and get their approval before implementing any changes to your lifestyle.
    • Reader Poll: We asked 136 wikiHow readers what helps them stay motivated to exercise, and 57% of them said setting goals for themselves. [Take Poll]
  4. Getting regular, good-quality sleep is essential for your health and emotional well-being. Not getting enough sleep affects your memory, problem-solving skills, and reaction time. [51] Some research shows that sleep deprivation is associated with pale skin, wrinkles, dark circles around your eyes, and a drooping mouth. [52]
    • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, and have a dedicated place to sleep to make it easier to doze off.
    • If you have trouble falling asleep, try progressive muscle relaxation . When you’re in bed for the night, tense your muscles and then release them, working from the top of your head to your feet.
    • Try oils and herbs like lavender, neroli, and valerian root to help you relax before sleep. Make sure to consult your doctor before taking any supplements.
  5. Meditation coach Soken Graf says, “[Meditation] just really helps you focus….if you can't focus, it means you have no control of your mind really, and if you can't control your mind, you're purely ruled by your nervous system and your environment.” [53] Meditation fosters a sense of inner peace and tranquility. This makes it easier for you to accept yourself as you are, no matter where you are in your journey.
    • Graf recommends choosing a good time and place where there will be no distractions to start meditating. [54]
    • Wear something loose and comfortable and sit in the lotus position or on the edge of a chair with your feet flat on the floor, he advises.
    • Inhale for a count of 4. Hold your breath for a count of 4. Exhale for a count of 4. Hold for a count of 4. Then, repeat from the beginning.

Setting Goals to Improve Your Appearance

PDF download Download Article
  1. Having clear goals helps you stay focused and on track. Be careful not to set too many goals for yourself at one time, though, or you may get overwhelmed. Ismail recommends setting SMART goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. [55]
    • Write your thoughts and feelings—and your action plan—in a dedicated journal and continue to write as you develop new habits so you know what works and what doesn’t.
    • Break big goals down into mini-goals to make them easier to tackle.
  2. Improving your appearance can take a lot of time and effort. Keep yourself motivated by rewarding yourself for your hard work. [56] Each time you achieve one of your goals, celebrate it!
    • Rewards could include buying a nice article of clothing, treating yourself to a spa day, or even buying that video game you like…as long as it doesn't take away from the time you spend working toward your goals!
  3. Positive change is difficult, so be gentle with yourself. Real change has its ups and downs. The key is to stay positive, be patient, and, most importantly, be kind to yourself. [57] That might mean being flexible about deadlines or giving yourself a break when you experience a setback. Give yourself the time and space you need.
    • If you decide that part of your plan to improve your appearance is to exercise more often, being gentle means being realistic about what you can do.
    • When you miss a day or make a mistake, you don’t get mad at yourself. Just acknowledge it, forgive yourself, and make a commitment to start fresh tomorrow.
    • Remember, if you’re trying to change how you look with the hopes of attracting someone, stay true to yourself and only do what feels right for you.

    Expert Answer
Start by going through your wardrobe and making sure you have a good selection of basics that fit you well—like plain tops, pants, and denim. Then, you can start adding in statement pieces, accessories, and comfortable shoes to create interesting outfits.
  • Question
How can I make my face naturally attractive?
    Community Answer
If you have acne, wash twice a day with a mild cleanse. Pluck your eyebrows to give it a more natural shape. Put on daily moisturizer so your skin isn't dry, and keep lips smooth with lip balm.
  • Question
What can I do if my hair is too curly?
    Community Answer
You could straighten your hair regularly, either chemically or using a straightener, but this method is going to damage your hair over time. (If you do choose to straighten it, make sure to use some kind of heat protectant spray.) If you want your curls to be more manageable, try using a shampoo and conditioner designed for curly hair. (If your curls are dry and frizzy, look for a shampoo and conditioner that's specifically designed to moisturize your hair.) Also, use a leave-in conditioner and some styling gel to keep your curls looking nice.
