If your computer is running a 64-bit version of Windows, it can still play 32-bit games as well as 64-bit games. Your game will run in 32- or 64-bit; whichever it is developed as. If you're running into issues like crashing, run your game in compatibility mode.

  1. You can right-click the game icon on your desktop or the .exe file in File Explorer. "Properties" opens a new window.
    • Use this method if you're running into issues playing your game. Compatibility mode should get rid of crashes and help the game run better if you have a newer operating system than the game was designed for.
  2. If you don't see this tab, the game was created and released with the current operating system and won't work for older versions.

  3. Find this checkbox under the "Compatibility mode" header. Once this box is checked, the drop-down will be interactive.
  4. Use the drop-down to select the OS that you have and need the game to run on.
    • If you are trying to run a game originally developed for Windows XP or older, check the box next to "Disable fullscreen optimizations."
  5. Click Ok to close the "Properties" menu when you're sure the game will run.
    • Adding a compatibility mode is a permanent change, so the game will always run for the operating system that you selected.
    • However, you can easily disable compatibility mode by returning to the Compatibility tab and unchecking the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for…" [1]
