PDF download Download Article

Slime is sticky, satisfying, and oh-so-fun to play with for sensory engagement, stress relief, or just a good ol’ time! However, there are many different types of slimes out there to choose from, so how do you know which one is right for you or your purposes? Fortunately, we’ve put together this master glossary of the most popular slime types and textures, as well as tips on how they feel, who they’re best for, and even how they’re made. We’ve even interviewed a group of slime experts for their insights on every squishy, sticky, and squeezable slime.

Most Popular Types of Slimes

Slime expert Amy Sheree lists clear, foam, snow fizz, and butter slimes amongst the most popular, with icee and beaded slimes being especially trendy in recent years. Read about each of these slime textures below:

  • Beaded Slime: A slime filled with tons of beads or charms for crunch and texture.
  • Butter Slime: A soft, moldable, and spreadable slime with a creamy, non-sticky feel.
  • Clear Slime: A transparent, gel-like slime that’s stretchy, glossy, and smooth.
  • Icee Slime: A wet, soft, and sizzly slime with a slushy-like texture.
  • Snow Fizz Slime: A sizzly, drizzly, crunchy, and holdable slime with a sandy texture.

Avalanche Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Avalanche slime is a combination of clear slime and colored glossy slime. The two slimes aren’t initially mixed together, however. Instead, the clear slime is used as a base while the layer of glossy slime sits on top. The glossy slime is made in some sort of contrasting color, either white or a more vibrant hue. After a few hours, the glossy slime seeps down into the clear slime to make a marbled, avalanche-like pattern. [1]
    • Feels… sticky, thick, gooey, and stretchy.
    • Best for… children or adults who want a very sensory and visually stimulating experience.
    • Make it by… preparing a batch of clear slime and a batch of colored (or white) glossy slime . Then, place the clear slime in a transparent container and place the glossy slime on top. Let the slime sit for a few hours before mixing.

Beaded Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Beaded slimes are filled with beads, charms, or other add-ins to give texture. These slimes can come in a variety of base textures (e.g., thick and glossy , butter , cloud , etc.), but they’re always filled with beads or other small objects. Add-ins can include normal beads , foam beads , fishbowl beads , micro beads , boba beads , and more. The effect of a beaded slime is to have more beads than slime, making for a super textural experience with bubble pops and satisfying crunches. These “sequin bombs and charm bombs—clear slimes with fun add-ins—are very trendy at the moment,” adds Sheree. [2]
    • Feels… crunchy, textured, squishy, and slightly sticky.
    • Best for… ASMR lovers and advanced slime users or adults, “who often prefer more advanced textures, like clear slime with sequins,” according to slime expert Summer Ames. [3]
    • Make it by… taking any type of slime you want (but, ideally, a glossy, butter, cloud, or clear slime) and add in as many beads, charms, or other tiny objects as the slime can hold.

Bingsu Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Bingsu slimes contain special beads that have a crunchy texture. Bingsu slimes usually use a clear slime or butter slime base, but they’re characterized by the addition of bingsu beads —a type of iridescent bead that traps and holds air in the slime. By adding tons of these beads, the slime is given a super sizzly, inflatable, and crunchy texture. Park adds that these bingsu slimes with “special crunchy beads” are particularly trendy. [4]
    • Feels… crunchy, airy, textured, tingly.
    • Best for… ASMR lovers, individuals with ADHD or anxiety, and advanced slime users.
    • Make it by… taking a clear slime or butter slime base and adding in a large quantity of bingsu beads—as many as will fit, if you want!

Butter Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Butter slime is a soft, moldable, and spreadable slime with a buttery texture. As its name implies, butter slime (also known as frosting slime) is very buttery and spreadable due to a high ratio of clay in its ingredients. In fact, butter slime is essentially just a glossy slime with air-dry clay mixed into it. It inflates very easily, and it’s not very sticky, which makes it very easy to hold and mold. [5]
    • Feels… smooth, soft, creamy, and spreadable.
    • Best for… “beginners, whether kids or adults, since…it’s less sticky and easier to handle,” says Ames. [6] However, butter slime is pretty popular with everyone, adds Sheree. [7]
    • Make it by… “mixing any type of light, soft, air-dry clay into your [clear or glossy] slime,” instructs Park. Aim for a ratio of “30% slime and 70% clay…Mix together and voila ! You have butter slime.” [8] You can also follow this tutorial .

Clay Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Clay slime is made from adding clay to any slime base. So, clay slimes are really a category that includes butter slimes, cloud dough slimes, and other popular variations. The base of the slime is usually clear or glossy, but once clay is added to it, it becomes a clay slime or “clime.” There’s also DIY Clay Slime , a popular type of slime kit sold by slime companies. These are containers filled with any type of slime and topped with a clay topper that’s sculpted into some fun shape. Users are meant to squish the clay topper into the base slime to create a more buttery texture.
    • Feels… soft, creamy, smooth, and stretchy.
    • Best for… kids or adults who want a sculptable, moldable, non-sticky slime for sensory play or stress relief.
    • Make it by… combining air-dry clay with white school glue, water, baking soda, and a slime activator (e.g., saline solution ). You can also add in food coloring, optionally, for added color.

Clear Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Clear slimes are transparent slimes traditionally made with glue. This classic type of slime is meant to be crystal-clear (including any mix-ins), and it often contains glycerin for an even stretchier pull. When played with, it has an almost water-like appearance but with a sticky, stretchy texture. Clear slime is also great for big bubbles, pops, and other ASMR sounds. However, it’s important to keep it super clean so that the slime doesn’t lose its transparent effect. [9]
    • Feels… smooth, glossy, stretchy, and jelly-like.
    • Best for… “advanced users,” says Sheree, especially because “they can stick easily. The key is to play with it using your fingertips, rather than your palms. Think of it as a ‘tapping slime’ instead of one that you hold.” [10]
    • Make it by… following this tutorial !

Cloud Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Cloud slime is a fluffy, drizzly, and silky slime made from white glue and instant snow. The hydrated instant snow powder gives the cloud slime its signature texture, explains Park. [11] When squeezed, the slime is fairly dense, doughy, and wet (without being sticky). When stretched, however, the slime becomes super fluffy and cotton candy-like. It starts to look very drizzly, soft, dry, and feathery, but it still feels very silky and moisturizing to the touch. [12] There are also two variations on cloud slime : cloud dough slime (cloud slime with clay added for a cookie-dough-like texture) and cloud creme slime (a creamier and inflatable but less fluffy cloud slime).
    • Feels… soft, fluffy, stretchy, and drizzly.
    • Best for… sensory regulation (due to the two different textures). Also, it’s a great “beginner-friendly texture,” says Sheree. [13] Ames explains that this is due to it being a “less sticky and easier to handle slime.” [14]
    • Make it by… slowly “incorporating hydrated instant snow in [white glue] slime until it starts to pull and become stringy,” instructs slime expert Angelina Ly. “The ideal texture is when you pull it up and it forms strings as it falls.” [15] Or, follow this tutorial !

Floam Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Floam slime is a type of bead slime that’s made with styrofoam beads. The base of “ floam ” is usually a clear or glossy slime, since these types work well to hold the styrofoam beads. Once the beads are added, the slime becomes super crunchy and satisfyingly noisy—however, it can also be very sticky! It’s best to apply a few drops of slime activator to your hands before playing with this slime, due to its sticky texture. [16]
    • Feels… squishy, stretchy, and crunchy.
    • Best for… kids of all ages who want to do sensory play or sculpt with their clay. It can also be very calming for adults and seniors.
    • Make it by… preparing a slime out of Borax dissolved in warm water and school glue that’s been watered down. Then, you can add styrofoam beads to the slime until it can’t hold any more.

Make sure to wash your hands really well before touching slime. Make sure you have no oil on your hands by washing them—that’s how you can play with slime without it sticking to your hands too much. Just wash your hands before touching slime and keep it in a cool place.

Float Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Float slime is a cross between clear slime and cloud slime. The slime is made with clear slime on the bottom of the container and the cloud slime layered on top. In effect, it looks like the cloud slime is float -ing on top of the clear slime. When the float slime is played with, the two textures are mixed together (and it’s super satisfying to watch them slowly combine). The resulting slime has a light, fluffy, stretchy, and very moldable texture.
    • Feels… light, fluffy, airy, and stretchy.
    • Best for… any slime user who wants a mix of textures, visuals, and big bubbles to poke and pop.
    • Make it by… making a batch of clear slime and a batch of cloud slime . Layer the cloud slime on top of the clear slime in a transparent container.

Fluffy Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Fluffy slime is light, fluffy, stretchable, and almost foam-like. “Fluffy slime is similar to butter slime,” says Sheree, “but the key ingredient is shaving cream.” [17] The shaving cream sets fluffy slime (or foam slime) apart by giving it a very light and airy texture with both volume and softness. [18]
    • Feels… fluffy, stretchy, soft, and bouncy.
    • Best for… adults and kids of all ages who want a clean, smooth, non-sticky slime that’s fun to squeeze, stretch, and shape.
    • Make it by… following this tutorial !
11

Glossy Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Glossy slime is the original slime texture made with white glue. The glossy slime is probably what you first think of when you think of slime. It’s made from a base of white glue, although it may also contain clear glue. These slimes are super thick, glossy, and stretchy, and they’re great for making pops and bubbles. Glossy slime is also used as a base for many combo textures, including floam slime, butter slime, cloud slime, and snow fizz slime. [19]
    • Feels… smooth, thick, and stretchy.
    • Best for… adults or advanced slime users who want a smooth, shiny, and stretchy slime that can do bubble pops and relieve stress.
    • Make it by… using “glycerin and glue,” says Sheree. “For a thin, glossy slime, use school glue. For a thick, glossy slime, use glue-all. Mix about 1 cup (240 mL) of glue with one to two small spoonfuls of glycerin, then add your Borax solution. [Combine], then let your glossy slime sit for a few days to let the air bubbles dissipate (which enhances the glossiness.” [20] Alternatively, follow this tutorial !

Icee Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Icee slime has a wet, sizzly texture similar to a frozen slushy. Icee slime is made with clear glue and a lot of hydrated instant snow , which is a “powder that turns into snow when you add water,” explains Park. [21] “The clear glue gives it that slushy kind of look, with the clarity and the sizzle,” adds Sheree. [22] The resulting texture is very squishy, sizzly, and wet—but not too sticky!
13

Jelly Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Jelly slime has a jam-like texture and a frosted gummy candy appearance. Jelly slime is actually similar to icee slime, since it also uses hydrated instant snow as an ingredient, notes Park. [25] However, jelly slime contains much less snow than icee slime, so it’s very holdable with a texture that’s jam-like without being sticky. The clear slime base also gives it a frosted visual look. There’s also jelly cube slime , which is jelly slime with cubes of melamine foam sponges that make popping sounds when squeezed.
    • Feels… thick, bouncy, gummy, and squishy.
    • Best for… beginners to slime who want a dense texture that can be poked and manipulated, as well as a non-sticky, more manageable slime.
    • Make it by… following this recipe !

Perlite Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Perlite slime is filled with small white rocks (perlite) made from volcanic glass. Perlite slime is a unique texture that’s come out of a recent trend, which Ames describes as “adding unique textures like beads, sand, aquarium gravel, or rocks” to slime in order to “create a distinct ASMR experience.” [26] Perlite slime contains rocks made of volcanic glass pieces that’ve been heated to a “popped,” pumice-like texture. [27] In slime, the perlite rocks create air pockets that can be popped, and the perlite pieces can also be massaged between hands or crushed between fingers.
    • Feels… airy, crunchy, and massage-like.
    • Best for… anyone who enjoys tactile sensory experiences, including the feel and sound of crunchy ASMR.
    • Make it by… adding perlite rocks (which you can buy online) into a clear or glossy slime .

Slay Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Slay slime is a fluffy, stretchy, and creamy slime that’s similar to butter slime. This texture is often described as a mix between a butter slime and a glossy slime. What sets it apart is a small amount of clay—more than a glossy slime, and less than a butter slime. The resulting slay slime texture is stretchy, flippable, and swirlable with a creamy, matte appearance.
    • Feels… creamy, stretchy, fluffy, and swirlable.
    • Best for… kids, teens, and adults who want a light and fluffy slime that can still be easily molded, swirled, and inflated for stress relief and slime tricks.
    • Make it by… making butter slime but removing about ¼ of the clay from the recipe.

Slushee Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Slushee slime contains “slushee beads,” which are special plastic pellets. Slushee slime (or slushy slime) is made by mixing Victory Pellets —which are round, hard beads—into a base of clear or white glue slime. The slushee slime then becomes super crunchy, both in feel and sound, while still maintaining that icy, drizzly texture. [28]
    • Feels… crunchy, icy, squishy, and stretchy.
    • Best for… intermediate slime users ages 8 and up, particularly those who like textured, crunchy, and satisfying ASMR slimes.
    • Make it by… following this tutorial !

Snow Fizz Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Snow fizz slime is holdable, sizzly, and crunchy with a sand-like feel to it. Unlike icee and slushee slime textures that use instant snow, snow fizz slime is created with plastic artificial snow, which is made from white plastic coat hangers that’ve been shaved down. The texture of snow fizz slime, therefore, is very sizzly and crunchy with an almost sand-like, exfoliating feel. It also makes a very fizzy, carbonated sound when popped and played with. However, it’s not as drizzly and loose as other slime types—it’s actually great for stretching, squeezing, and massaging.
    • Feels… sizzly, crunchy, sandy, and stretchy.
    • Best for… older children and adults who are beginners to slime, especially if they like something very sensory, stimulating, satisfying, and ASMR-like.
    • Make it by… combining plastic artificial snow with clear PVA glue , water, and Borax .

Water Slime

PDF download Download Article
  1. Water slimes are super jiggly, loose, and—you guessed it—similar to water. “Water slime with a jiggly, super watery texture” is very popular, says Park. [29] Also known as jiggly slime, explains Ly, water slime is “essentially a basic slime with a lot of water incorporated into it to give it that jiggly texture.” [30] These water slimes end up being very gel-like, smooth, stretchy, loose, and non-sticky.
    • Feels… watery, jiggly, squishy, and cool.
    • Best for… kids and adults who want a jiggly and non-sticky texture but who don’t care about their slime being able to stretch or inflate.
    • Make it by… using either “clear glue or school glue,” says slime expert Shellisa Ruvalcaba. “You heavily activate the slime so it’s not too sticky, then incorporate a lot of water to make it jiggly.” [31] You can also follow this tutorial !
