In Minecraft, armor stands can be used to hold and display your armor and other wearable items. You can also use it to display other items, like mob heads and carved pumpkins. We’re here with everything you need to know about making an armor stand in Minecraft, from what to mine to how to use the stand once it’s finished.
Armor Stand Recipe: Quick Guide
To make an armor stand, craft 6 sticks and one smooth stone slab. Open your crafting table and place 3 sticks across the top row, one stick in the center of the middle row, and one stick in either corner of the bottom row. Then, place the smooth stone slab in the center of the bottom row.
Steps
Making an Armor Stand in Minecraft
-
Gather 4 wood blocks from a tree. Start by scouting the map until you find a tree—any type of wood will work for this. Then, either punch the tree trunk or use an axe to mine at least 3 wood block (also called logs) from the tree. [1] X Research source
- Hitting the tree without a weapon will take longer, so it’s probably worth crafting an axe if you plan to do a lot of building.
- If you already have a crafting table, you only need 1 block of wood for your armor stand and 2 to use as fuel for the furnace.
-
Mine at least 11 cobblestone blocks. You’ll need to craft a pickaxe in order to mine cobblestone. Use the pickaxe to mine the stone blocks that you can find in caves and along the sides of mountains and cliffs. Keep mining until you have 11 blocks. [2] X Research source
- Stone is very common, so you shouldn’t have much trouble finding it.
- You’ll need 8 cobblestone blocks to make a furnace and 3 cobblestone blocks to make the smooth stone block for your armor stand.

3Craft wooden plank blocks out of 2 wood blocks. After you mine the wood, open your inventory and drag 2 wood blocks into the crafting grid at the top of the inventory. This will create 8 wooden planks. Drag these plank blocks into your inventory. [3] X Research source
- To open the crafting menu: Press E on PC, X on Xbox One, Y on Nintendo Switch, Square on Playstation, or … on mobile.
- You can place the wood blocks anywhere in the crafting grid.
-
4Make a crafting table if you don’t have one. With your inventory still open, place a wooden plank in each of the 4 sections of the crafting grid. This will create a crafting table . Drag it into your inventory as well. Close your inventory, then place the crafting table on the ground. [4] X Research source
- If you already have a crafting table, you can skip this step.
-
Use the crafting table to make 8 wooden sticks. Stand next to the crafting table and open the crafting menu. Place 2 wooden planks stacked vertically on the crafting table grid to craft 4 sticks. It doesn’t matter where you place the planks on the crafting table, as long as you place them one on top of the other. [5] X Research source Repeat this for a total of 8 sticks, moving the sticks into your inventory each time you craft them.
- To open the crafting menu: Right-click on PC or Mac, press the left trigger button on XBox or Playstation, or tap on the crafting table on mobile. [6] X Research source
-
6Craft a furnace to smelt the cobblestone. To craft a furnace , open your crafting table menu and place 8 cobblestone blocks around the edges of the 3x3 crafting grid. Drag the furnace into your inventory when you’re finished. [7] X Research source
- Leave the center block empty when you craft the furnace—only place the cobblestone on the top, bottom, and sides of the grid.
-
Smelt 3 cobblestone blocks to make stone blocks. To use the furnace , stand next to it and open the furnace menu just like you did for the crafting table. Place 3 cobblestone blocks in the space above the icon that resembles a flame, and place your remaining wood block as fuel in the space below the flame. When the cobblestone blocks are finished smelting, they will be turned into regular stone blocks. [8] X Research source
-
8Smelt the stone blocks to turn them into smooth stone. Repeat the same process as above, placing the 3 blocks into the furnace on top and a wood block (or other fuel source) on bottom. This time, when the blocks finish smelting, they will be smooth stone blocks. Add these to your inventory. [9] X Research source
-
9Craft smooth stone slabs in the crafting table. Once you have 3 smooth stone blocks in your inventory, go back to your crafting table and open the menu. Select smooth stone slabs from the crafting menu, or place three smooth stone blocks in the bottom row of the 3x3 crafting grid. Drag the smooth stone slabs into your inventory. [10] X Research source
-
Craft an armor stand. Once you have 6 sticks and a smooth stone slab, open your crafting table menu. Either select an armor stand from the crafting menu or use the following pattern: 3 sticks in the top row of the 3x3 grid, one stick in the middle space of the grid, and one stick each in the bottom-left and bottom-right spaces of the 3x3 grid. Finally, place a smooth stone slab in the bottom-center space of the 3x3 grid.
- Drag the armor stand into your inventory to finish crafting it.
- If you’re planning to use the armor stand right away, equip it into your hot bar so it will be easier to find.
- To place the armor stand, equip it, then click on the map where you want it to go.
