There are 1000 grams in 1 kilogram. You can remember that because "kilo" means "thousand." If you start with 5000 grams, you would divide by 1000, so the answer would be 5 kilograms. On the other hand if you have 43 kilograms and you want to convert it to grams, you'd multiply by 1000 to get 43,000 grams.
