There are many roots to a plant. There is a main root, and then there are many smaller roots coming from the main root. The smaller roots grow away from the main root in search of water. When they find water, they suck it up and the water goes to the main root so the plant can grow. As the plant grows, so do the roots, but the main root will always be the biggest.
