Well, the daylight sensor is the only sure fire way to get a light/door to open at night. You could, however, set a pressure plate inside a one block wide house and spawn a villager outside it. At night he will enter to stay safe and stand on the pressure plate, turning on the light/door.

I'm not very experienced with Minecraft can somebody give easier instructions?

Yes. Go to creative mode to make the job easier, and search daylight sensor. Select it then a random slot in you're hotbar, just make sure there's nothing in it. Now place the sensor wherever you want and to turn it into a nighttime sensor get close to it, and right click it, if on mobile there will be a button. Now to make something turn on at night time, make a redstone path to what you want to turn on at night. There you go, mission accomplished.
