    Expert Answer
Vinegar is not damaging to your hair but it could lead to dryness if overused. Only apply to wet hair, dilute it with some water, and don't use it more than once a week.

Cider vinegar (and any other type of vinegar) will reduce the pH of the hair which causes the cuticles to lie flat, creating a protective seal. On the downside, it can strip away some of your hair's natural oils.

It shouldn't burn if it's properly diluted, but if it does, I recommend rinsing it out immediately because you could have an open sore and it should be rinsed thoroughly.

You can use distilled white vinegar for the rinse—that's what my mom used when I was growing up! However, apple cider vinegar smells better and is less harsh.

    Expert Answer
Vinegar is great for African and other extremely curly hair types. It removes dandruff and gently cleanses the hair. However, for curly hair I'd recommend using 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar instead of the 1:1 ratio recommended above and I wouldn't use this rinse more often than once a week.
