QuestionHow does a tennis tiebreaker work?Peter Fryer is a Tennis Instructor based in Derry, Northern Ireland. He works as both a tennis writer and a coach. He completed his professional tennis teaching qualification shortly after finishing university and has been teaching the sport for over 13 years. Peter began the Love Tennis Blog in 2010, and is a contributing writer for the BBC and a variety of other national media outlets.A tiebreaker is played at the end of a set with the score is tied at 6-6. The winner is the first player to get to 7 and lead by two points, for example 7-5, 9-7, or 10-8. Player A begins the tiebreaker with one service point starting on the deuce court. Player B then has two service points that begin on the advantage (left hand side of the court) side. Both players take two serves alternately until one player reaches 7. After 6, 12, 18 points are played, players swap sides. This is to ensure that any one player does not benefit from favorable conditions.

You use the same service rotation as you had been using for the rest of the games in that set, prior to the tie breaker. Now, if you are one set apiece, and the third set is a 10 point tie breaker, you and your partner can switch up who serves first or second, and switch up, if you like, who plays the deuce court and who plays the ad court. The third set 10 point tie breaker is just like a new set.
