  • Question
How long does it typically take for someone to get to a advanced typing speed, say like up to 40-45 WPM?
    Community Answer
This really depends on so many things like where you are starting out, how much you practice and how long you've been typing. Try keybr.com as a training tool and spend 10 minutes a day. Clock yourself once a week on typingtest.com and you'll slowly increase. Follow the instructions above and you'll be well above 45 WPM in no time at all.

  • Question
What is considered to be fast typing?
    Community Answer
Technically, there is no typing speed that is considered "fast." A good typing speed is considered to be about 40 WPM, although professional typists can reach typing speeds of up to 75 WPM. The world record is 212 WPM, although that is quite pointless and nearly impossible.
  • Question
Can I type faster without putting my fingers in the right places?
    Community Answer
Some people adapt their own typing "style" and manage to speed along pretty quickly without doing things by the book. So it's possible, though if you are learning, you'd be better served by training yourself to place your fingers properly.
  • Question
How do I remember key positions?
    Community Answer
As you practice typing, you will develop muscle memory for the positions of the keys. You eventually won't even have to consciously remember where they are.
  • Question
I used to type with a speed of 80 words per minute, but since I changed the keyboard my speed has gone down to 60 words per minute. How can I increase my speed to 100 wpm?
    Community Answer
Keep practicing with your new keyboard and you will get better. If you find you can't get better with this keyboard, switch back to your old keyboard, or try to find a new one that works well for you.

  • Question
What should be the height of the table and bench to start typing?
    Community Answer
It shouldn't matter. Find a table a meter high, and a chair that can adjust. Try different positions until you find the one that is most comfortable. I would also recommend getting a wrist wrest, it is a lifesaver, and allows for proper wrist positioning without you having to think about it.
  • Question
I'm 8 years old and can type 60-110 WPM. Is this good for my age?
    Community Answer
Very; 60-110 WPM is a good level for your age.
  • Question
How much time should I spend on typing practice, to be a fast typist within a month?
    Community Answer
This really depends on your starting point and how fast you'd like to be at the end of the month. Search online for sites that teach typing, and aim for 45 minutes to an hour each day; you may have to build up to this, as your hands and fingers may quickly grow tired at first.
  • Question
Will typing with one hand decrease my speed?
    Community Answer

    Community Answer
Some people have reached typing speeds up to 120 - 170 WPM. I wouldn't switch to Dvorak with speed as your motivation, but Dvorak can be easier for the hands and for learning.
  • Question
How fast should a kid type?
    Tujoues
    Community Answer
A child can start learning keyboarding at ages 8-9. They will be able to handle sitting down for periods of time and practicing, along with the memorization. The speed and accuracy varies child by child, so it's best not to expect too much. Remember that first the child must get their accuracy up to at least 96% before focusing on speed. Typing accurately is more important than typing quickly.
  • Question
    Is Dvorak better than Qwerty?
    Tujoues
    Community Answer
Because QWERTY is so widespread and almost all keyboards are QWERTY, it may come down to a question of availability and sharing. Knowing QWERTY would be the best, because it is so prevalent, just like knowing a very common language will help you better in general than knowing a less known language.
  • Question
I'm a 10 year old, and I can type up to 50-70 WPM. How is my typing speed?
    Tujoues
    Community Answer
That's great! As you grow older, you will definitely keep improving with practice. 70 WPM is definitely not bad at your age. Your goal is to increase your accuracy if it's below 97% and to raise your speed to 100+.
  • Question
What's a good method to keep your fingers from drifting from home row?
    Tujoues

Now my words per minute is only 20 WPM. After how long I can type 45 or 50 wpm if I practice daily 30 minutes. 2 months or more?
    Ben Hansell
    Community Answer
It varies per person. I started at 20 WPM and just learning the standard technique took 30 minutes a day for about a month and took me to 40 WPM. Another couple of months of similarly regular practice took me to 60 WPM. Some people progress a lot faster than that though.
  • Question
I know the basics of typing but I keep on looking down keyboard and it slows down my typing. How can I stop looking down on my keyboard?

You can buy a blank set of keycaps which doesn't have letters on it. However, be aware that that costs £20, and a mechanical keyboard which can take standard keycaps is another £80.
  • Question
I can already touch type but my accuracy is really low. What sites are best for improving accuracy as opposed to learning to touch type?
    Ben Hansell
    Community Answer
There are a few practice websites such as problemwords.com and keybr.com which record every mistake you make and choose the next set of practice words accordingly. So you can focus on just the letters/combinations that are causing you trouble. Make sure first that you are consistently using just one designated finger for each key though (e.g., the home row method) as you don't want to spend a lot of time reinforcing bad technique.

I don’t have much time for typing. I am already pretty good, my average is 73 wpm, but if I don’t practice, will my speed decrease, even though I have muscle memory?

No, the speed won't decrease too much. Plus, typing anything is practice.

Type slowly and more accurately to try to increase muscle memory. Most programs that teach you to type also focus on accuracy way before speed.

  • Question
What is the fastest way to speed up my typing?
    THUONG CHU
    Community Answer
Get familiar with the keyboard layout and remember the keys and where the hands are located, how to move to each key, practice 10-finger typing. Also, don't look at the keyboard while typing. This can be a difficult habit to break, but constantly looking back and forth between the screen and keyboard will limit your typing speed. If you want to maximize your speed, try learning to type by touching each key's position according to memory.
