Fix Discord Crashing While Streaming

If your computer has 2 graphics cards, you may need to open your software's control panel and make sure Discord is set to use the most powerful one. You can also change the audio subsystem to "Legacy" or disable autostart on specific software that comes with some motherboards.

  1. Skip this step if your computer or laptop only has one graphics card. This is most commonly seen with an NVIDIA graphics card along with an integrated Intel card but can happen with other kinds of cards as well. To change which graphics card you're using:
    • Open the NVIDIA control panel (right-click any empty space on your desktop and select "NVIDIA control panel").
    • Click Manage 3D settings in the menu on the left.
    • Click the Program Settings tab and click Add under "Select a program to customize."
    • Select "Discord" and click Add Selected Program .
    • Select "High-performance NVIDIA processor" under "2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program"
    • Click Apply at the bottom of the window and restart Discord to see if the problem is fixed.

    • Click the toggle next to Hardware Acceleration to turn it off (the switch should be grey).
  4. The cache may be full of unnecessary data that can slow it down, make your graphics card work too hard, and crash while you're streaming. To clear up this space on Windows and Mac, follow these steps:
    • Windows:
      • Press Win + R to open Run.
      • Type %AppData%\discord and press Enter .
      • Double-click "Cache" to open the folder.
      • Press Ctrl + A to select everything and delete your selection (you can either press Del on your keyboard or right-click and select Delete .)
      • Go back to the main folder and double-click the "Local Storage" folder.

    • Mac:

      • Right-click these folders and select Move to Trash .
      • Right-click the Trash icon in the Dock and select Empty Trash .

    • Go to Voice & Video in Settings.
    • Click the switch next to "Use our latest technology to capture your screen" under the "Voice Diagnostics" header. The switch will be grey if it's disabled.
  6. A lot of times, Discord will crash while you're streaming because you've maxed out your memory. This is most likely the culprit if you're streaming games that use a lot of memory, like League of Legends, and Discord freezes in the middle of a session.
