How to Get the "Cut" HM in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

This wikiHow teaches you how to obtain an HM that allows you to cut down trees that are in your way. You can obtain this HM in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen versions.

Things You Should Know

Travel to the Cerulean City and defeat the 5 trainers and their leader so you can cross the Nugget Bridge.
Head north until you reach the big house. Stand in front of the computer and select it to receive the boarding pass to the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City.
Go back to Cerulean City and travel through the Underground Tunnel to Vermilion City.
Head to the boat walkway and show your boarding pass to the guard. Then, go upstairs, find the captain, and rub his back to get the "Cut" HM.

You receive the "Cut" HM from the captain of the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City, so you must first travel to Cerulean City before you can begin.

Defeat the five trainers and their leader. Before you can cross the bridge, you'll need to defeat the five trainers here, as well as defeat their leader.

Receive safe passage. Once you've defeated all six of the enemies, you can cross the bridge.
- If you have any healing potions, make sure that you heal up your pokémon before proceeding.

Take a sharp right and continue until you're stopped by a trainer.

Once you arrive at the largest house in town, head inside. You should see a pokémon in the middle of the room.

Use the computer. Stand in front of the computer, select it, and wait for the pokémon to turn back into a human being.
- You may need to select a computer option in order to trigger this event.

Head west from the large house, then head south to cross back over Nugget Bridge. This will take you back into Cerulean City.

Beat Misty's gym . Go to Misty's water gym and battle her. Once you complete this task, Vermilion City will unlock.
- Since Misty's gym is a Water-type environment, using a Grass- or Electric-type pokémon is recommended.

This house is to the east of Misty's gym. You'll notice that this house now has no one in front of it.

Head through the house, then head to the south-east until you arrive at the Underground Tunnel house.

Head down into the house to do so. You'll emerge on the other side, straight into Vermilion City.

You'll find this section toward the south end of Vermilion City. A guard will stop you if you try to walk onto the walkway.

Board the boat and make your way through it, battling anyone you encounter when prompted. You'll ultimately run into your rival here; after defeating him, you'll be able to continue along to find the captain.

Once the back rub is complete, the captain will reward you with the "Cut" HM. You can now use it with your preferred pokémon.

Once you've allowed one of your pokémon to learn the "Cut" HM, you'll be able to cut down path-blocking trees throughout the world by selecting the pokémon and using it on the tree(s).

How do I teach my Pokemon cut after getting the HM?

You go to your bag, open the TMs/HMs pocket, and find the Cut HM. Activate it by pressing A, then choose the Pokemon you want to teach Cut. Note that not every Pokemon can learn it, and if you want to delete it later, you'll have to visit the Move Deleter in Fuchsia City.

Your rival uses Electric Pokémon, so bring a Ground type. If you don't have a Ground type, you can catch a Diglett or a Dugtrio at the Diglett's Cave on the eastern exit of Vermilion.
