Most of the time, it's just memorization. But, you can assume the longer version of a word is feminine, and the shorter masculine. Another way to tell when reading is if the sentence uses "le" or "la." "Le" is masculine, while "la" is feminine. But yet again, knowing 100% of the time is memorization, because there are exceptions to this rule. I'd suggest only using words you know the forms of.
