QuestionHow do I find any relative by surname only?Community AnswerYou need another piece of information: when did they live? Where did they live? Do you know the full name of a son or daughter? You can search their name in the US or state census records and see if the full family is listed. Did they emigrate by boat (boat manifests) or arrive through Ellis Island? Do your relatives have any other information? Were they in the military? Look through old letters and/or photographs for any names or locations or dates?

QuestionI just found out about my father having a son. How can I find him?Community AnswerIf you have a time or place, try the local newspaper's birth/death notices. Maybe there will be a name. If it's very recent, you probably can't get birth information from the state. Try the census after the son's birth, but if it's recent, that census may not have been released to the public.
