Start by measuring your waist and skirt length—remember to write these down. You'll need 3 times your waist size to ensure that your pleats are generous, plus a seam allowance and zipper install.

Make smaller pleats if you want to have a lot of them, or use larger pleats if you want fewer. Once you decide on the size of your pleats, measure and mark them on the wrong side of your fabric.

Cut your fabric, then mark and fold your pleats. Check to make sure the waist of your skirt is the right size, then sew up the back seam. Be sure to leave enough space to add your zipper. Finally, add your waistband and hem the skirt to your desired length.
  • Question
How many pleats do I have to have in a skirt?
    Michele
    Top Answerer
As many as yo want. You can put one pleat in the front, or two or three or make pleated all around. You can have them only in the front or only in the back. Pleats are a wonderful way to not only make a skirt fuller, but create a unique look.
  • Question
How am I supposed to wear it? On top of my belly button? Under my stomach? On my hips? I need to know so I can measure the length correctly.
    Community Answer
I tend to wear pleated skirts on my waist, above the hips at the smallest part of my belly. This is typically around where you elbows are in relation to your torso.
