    Expert Answer
I use them to clear the room after I've been with the client—even if I'm online, because there's still an energy exchange—to kind of cleanse and freshen up the air, releasing whatever needs to be released out of the room.
  • Question
What type of string should I use?
    Chris
    Top Answerer
You can use normal string or twine to bind the smudge stick. As long as the string is made from natural materials, it's safe to burn.
  • Question
Does it matter how thick the stems are?
    Chris
    Top Answerer
You should try to keep all the stems a consistent length, so they all burn at the same rate. It doesn't matter too much how thick they are, so long as they aren't really thick and woody. The branches that have bark on them don't have as many essential oils in them, causing an unpleasant odor when burnt.
  • Question
Is smudging based on any medical research, or is it just superstition?

It's mostly superstition, but the scent can be pleasant, similar to incense. Sage and rosemary are soothing and calming to many people.
