Most councils and other local authorities have special "dumps" where you are supposed recycle. All of these have areas especially for different plastics. If you have no way of getting there yourself, you can put all plastic items into one larger plastic bag clearly marked "PLASTIC" so it doesn't get thrown away with the other items. Check with your local trash authorities to be sure though.
