This guide teaches you how to add subtitles to a video in Windows Media Player. To use subtitles, create or download a subtitle file, give the file the same name as the video (keep the .SRT extension), and put it in the same folder as the video. We'll also show you how to do it in VLC Media Player.

Quick Steps

  1. Download or create a subtitle file in the .SRT format.
  2. Give the subtitle file the same name as the video (minus the extension).
  3. Save the subtitle file to the same folder as the video file.
  4. Start playing the video.
  5. Press Ctrl + Shift + C to enable subtitles.

  6. Right-click the subtitles file, click Rename , and press Ctrl + V to paste in the copied video name. You can then press Enter or click elsewhere to apply the name.
  7. In order for your subtitles file to work with your video, the video and the subtitles file must be in the same folder (e.g., on the Desktop or in the "Pictures" folder). Once both files are in the same location, you may proceed.
