  • Question
Can I cut a large rectangular tablecloth down to fit a smaller round table?
    Community Answer
Yes, as long as the diameter of the table is smaller than the width of the rectangle.
  • Question
How can I lengthen the sides of a tablecloth that isn't wide enough?
    Community Answer
Add panels of the same or contrasting color/pattern on each side that needs more length.
  • Question
Should I cut off the selvage edges before I sew around the tablecloth?
    Community Answer
I cut off the selvage before hemming a tablecloth. The selvage is woven tighter than the rest of the fabric and will shrink at a different rate, potentially creating puckers along the edge of the tablecloth unless removed!

Can I make a tablecloth using a half a yard of cloth?

It will probably be a very small tablecloth and difficult to work with, but it can be done. It all depends on the size of table you're trying to cover.
  • Question
Where do I put the seam if my fabric isn't wide enough for a 15" drop? The table is 96" by 30".
    Community Answer
You should choose a fabric that is at least 58"-60" wide for a tablecloth. Otherwise, think about adding a border all the way around. Seaming really isn't a professional option.
  • Question
What is the best backing to use so the tablecloth won't slip?
    Brett Gilbert

There are plastic or PVC liners, which are good for wood tables. They protect tables from water and temperature damage. Rubber liners are about the same. You could also get felt, but it's trickier to keep in place.
  • Question
How can I shorten a round tablecloth for a small table?
    Brett Gilbert
    Top Answerer
Laying the tablecloth out and cutting around its perimeter will help, but hemming it may be easier. Fold the end up and sew it to hide some of the excess length.
  • Question
What is the best fabric for dining room tablecloth and napkins?
    Brett Gilbert
    Top Answerer
Linen or cotton are the traditional choices since they are both soft and durable. They absorb liquids well, too. You can also use polyester or vinyl for a stain-resistant cloth. Some people even make specialty products out of fabrics like silk.
  • Question
What goes under a tablecloth and above a table so that the tablecloth does not slide off the table?
    Brett Gilbert
    Top Answerer
For a well-cut tablecloth, you usually won't have anything holding it in place except a liner underneath it. Many tablecloths have mitered corners that fit securely over the table's corners to help hold it down too if your table is rectangular. You could also put a bowl, flowers, or something else on top to pin it.
