What happens if iTunes doesn't recognize that the device is in recovery mode? No alert message pops up.

Unplug the cable from the iPod, but leave it plugged into the computer (with iTunes open). Shut off your device and enter recovery mode again by holding down Power and Home. Once it's entered recovery mode, keep holding down Home as you plug the cable into the iPod. If iTunes still doesn't detect recovery mode, reinstall iTunes or try again with a different cable or a different computer.

Hold down the power button for 3 seconds (just count to 3 in your head), After you count to 3, press and hold the home button while still holding the power button down. Now, keeping the power and home buttons pressed, count off another 10 seconds. When you're done with the 10 second count, release the power button but keep holding down the home button for 5-10 more seconds. You're screen should remain on an empty black page. From there, hold both the home and power button for approximately 5 seconds, and it should reboot back to your lock screen.
